Very interesting information (id3 tags). Actually I tried some libmad opimizations in 0.6. They don't seem to make any noticeable speed improvement, but if they produce some problems, I might as well remove them...

Ok ok Fakk2, I can't keep up with your tests !!! ;-) I just fixed the distorted sound in puzzle buble, and I discovered there was no stereo at all in the sound effects, because of a huge mistake in streams.c... So now we get a clear sound everywhere, and in stereo ! Next version will be nice !!!

Djacura , the IPL.TXT error should be fixed soon as my Double Dragon does the same thing and Zelurker said he fixed that problem for the next release. Maby then your Fatal Fury Special will work. Lets keep our fingers crossed. To Zelurker, Fantastic, great job! From now on I'll hook up the PSP to my 7.1 reciever and I can really enjoy testing it out now, now that its in Stereo! Sorry I didnt do that before or we would have seen that allready. Should I test out more 0.6.2 or wait till the next version?

Hi,
I can't run kof96 with music. It only has sound effect. I have tried World Hero Perfect, Cross Sword 2, Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Ninja Master, SS2 and SS3, all of them are ok with sound and music. Any idea? My I get a poor rom file?
Also, I find it difficult to input the special moves command when playing SNK production games, like kof and ss series, but for World Hero and Aggressors of Dark Kombat, it is quit easy to do. Can anyone advise why?
Thanks in advise.

Try reading the bottom of page 2. "ID3 Tags" there is a program mentioned there for your KOF96 MP3s.
Some games need more accuracy for the special moves. Try using the Analog stick for the games instead of the Digital. Analog has easier movements for the PSP. Diagonal movements on Digital is harder to do.

To raylokn21, Have you checked to see if the mp3s have ID3 tags? If so, refer to my earlier post in this thread. Last post on the 2nd page.

SINCE KOF97 WAS THE SLOWEST AMONG ALL GAMES,NOW I GOT NO MORE THAN 3XFPS WITH MUSIC AND SYNC,EVEN THOUGH IT REMAINS 60FPS WHILE BOTH TURNED OFF, I WAS WONDERING IS IT POSSIBLE TO RUN KOF97 PERFECTLY 60FPS WITH SYNC ON AND MP3 BACKGROUNDMUSIC IN FUTURE VERSION(PERHAPS 1.0..FAR FAR AWAY) ;D

Vsync is useless, just turn it off.

well,IMHO Sync is not so trivial as you think,sync-off causes significant partial distortion & discontinuous motion especially on horizontal spirit movement, and most arcade or console does have sync on. the only problem for sync is: if framerate was below refreshrate,it just dropped at refreshrate/N (N is an integer),luckly it can be solved by using triple buffer which maintains FPS as if sync was off(like many PCgames) I was just wondering is it possible to implement triple buffer on psp??

vsync is useless because the video is rendered using double buffering right now. So I doubt you could see any "horizontal distortion". Actually vsync was especially usefull on low end monitors with low refresh rates. It's not really the case here... And I am not even sure the psp refreshes its screen at 60 Hz or more (unlikely).
For scanlines, they can be handfull with plenty of resulution, like 640x480 or more. I remind you that the psp is working in 480x272, which is very close to the neocd resolution (320x224). So this is not exactly the ideal resolution for scanlines. I might try it much later when I'll have nothing better to do, which is not going to happen before very long probably !

I think many others would absolutely notice the distortion. "horizontal distortion" was just caused by swapping buffer while refreshing display using doublebuffer.Vsync is to eliminate these distortion by simply preventing swapping buffer while refreshing, and consequently lead to lower performence. so add a third buffer would help, that`s the way TripleBuffer works. there is no doubt that psp`s refreshrate is 60hz (just like most LCD) any way, it would be great that someone achieve triple buffer for homebrew application.
PS:indeed, scanline mode was a bit useless for such resolution of the screen.

Hi Samuraix & Fakks,
Thanks for your advise. I have tried the program, I searched it from the Google search engine and download from a Itilian site. However, I cannot run it from by destop........may be because I am using Chinese WinXP.
As I read another post, Zelurker is going to fix this in the next version. So I will be patient and wait.
Anyway, thanks for your advise.

Yeah cyrax, my mistake. I hadn't even noticed that the double buffering didn't use vsync on hardware, it's a simple double buffering. You have to test games which make heavy use of horizontal scrollings to notice the distortions anyway...
But I continue to think that considering the very little improvement that vsync gives, compared to the huge slowdown that it creates, it's much better to keep it always off. So much that I should even remove the option, at least until someone finds a way to do it without loosing speed, at least if there is a way to do it without loosing speed !

Yes it would seem you are right siso, but it is closed source and the author is japenese ! I'll never understand how people can make closed source emulators... anyway... So I'll keep the option in case someone finds how to fix it one day !

About the endless list of bug found by Fakk2 ;-) : Top Players Golf : I never saw any game accessing the sound hardware this way. Anyway it wasn't hard to fix. It's really far from the usual negeo games by the way ! Art of Fighting 2 : I never had this fatal bug you are talking about, and I still haven't got it. Art of Fighting 3 : This one was awfull. Remember the fix for the disappearing graphics in art of fighting ? Well one of these undocumented writes I removed was used by art of fighting 3 ! Luckily, adding it back does not take back the bug in Art of fighting, so they are both fixed now.
I am taking a break from all these bugs now ! ;-)
Added today also : you can now also put your mp3s in /psp/music if you prefer, because you should be able to play them from the psp interface if you want to. So if you have a game in a directory mslug, then you can put the mp3s either in mslug/neocd.mp3 (as before) or /psp/music/mslug
Also added more verbosity to the game. Now a quick message is displayed at the bottom of the screen when it starts an mp3 to tell you which file is played, and if it fails, it tells you why. Also the fix for the id3 tags is in, and it works. And having an mp3 file with a length of O or 1 byte does not crash the emulator anymore !
That's all for today...

Aero Fighters uses full screen scrollings and distortion was most obvious in that game. In most games, the distortions caused by v-sync off were not untolerable, just annoying. however using V-sync would be definitely said to be perfect, and triple buffer was the only way to do it without losing speed(also the most common & intuitive way).I have several Direct3D application experience, but litte at psp develop environment, hope you can find some useful stuff on triple-bufferring and achieve it some day PS:now many games like kof99 ,lastblade 2,Aero Fighters,ss4 ect.....can run perfectly 60fps with V-sync while playing without background music.

AOF2 does not just crash by itself. You must wait till the match begins between you and the enemy, and just as soon as the match begins and they are about to taunt each other with thier little statements hit the X button and that should freeze up the Emulator. Maby this is another one I need to send to you, since I own it on the real CD. I'm telling you AOF2 has a bug. ;D Please let me send it to you somehow so you can get it working. and please dont bother with doind V-Sync and tripple buffer stuff until you get all the games at least up and running. I would rather see all the games working first other than seeing perfect scanlines etc... with broken games still existing.
