Hey all, This is my first post so please bear with me if I'm asking a stupid question.
I'm trying to run the early Genesis NHL games on my Palm TX. Can't get them to work and I can't see why much more complex games do work. Anyone had any trouble with EA Sports games on Genesis or SNES LJP?
Please help!! Can't wait to play these great sports games!

Do other games work? What are your settings? What exactly do you call "can't get them to work"? Any error message? Hard to help when you're not very specific

None of the NHL series will allow me to get any further than seeing a few of the credit screens while loading. The main menu with sound never comes up. THis has been true for NHL 92-94 on the Gens emulator. I've been playing the same rom files on my computer for months so I know that's not the problem. I can't tell you what settings I used in UMDH because I read so many posts stating how dangerous it was to have it on a TX, so I deleted it immediately. And as far as LJP settings, can you recommend a good list of settings for the Gens emu to work on a TX?

tinpanalley: you tried Z80 sound on, and/or C core?

I'll answer for him: C/ASM core doesn't make a difference... however, those black screens I reported go away when ZX80 sound is turned on in '94 and '95 (still not in '96)

Hey again, Thanks for all the help guys.
My concern is, didn't I read somewhere that it's really bad to run UMDH on a TX because of the onboard memory that it has? Can't it get seriously damaged by UMDH?

Yes, UDMH 3 should NOT be used on a TX... however, everyone should be using UDMH 5.x now anyway. I use it on my TX with no ill effects. Just remember to set the memory to 19261K for LJP and enable Clean Up.

Where do I get UMDH 5?

Will UMDH 5.x be completely safe to use on my TX and my Tungsten E? And also, what settings should I use to make those EA Sports titles run smoothly?
AND THANK YOU THANK YOU THANKYOU!!

Well, UDMH will never be *completely* safe to use anywhere, but 95% chance you'll not have problems with it, 4.5% chance you'll have hard resets and 0.5% you'll brick your palm. I'd say less than 0.5%.

Any other similar memory-type programs I can run in conjunction with UMDH to help things run smoothly? Or is UMDH the only thing I need?

UDMH 5 is on Dmitry's site... he links to it in this thread. Read the Lifedrive thread on here for more details about running LJP; as I said in that thread, skip step 1 and you've got instructions for the TX too.

Thank you all again.
One more thing... where do I go on the TX to see what my DB cache is and once I figure out where it is, how do I increase it?

You don't "increase" it; ie: its size is fixed. You just free it. Just use DBCacheTool and tell it to clean it for you.

Hey again, Sorry to be difficult, but after following all the suggestions and getting all the software, I'm still not understanding how to actually clear or free the DB cache. Is there a button that activates this process or does it happen when you power on the Palm? I'm sorry, I'm very confused.
Also, to _Em, when you got NHL 93 and 94 to work, were they really slow or am I doing something wrong?
THanks

You must get the app called DBCacheTool (NOT included with the OS, just google it) and use it to clear the DBCache.

Now that everything is working, I have a question regarding the Genesis cartridge battery backup.
On the cartridge, you could save a playoff in progress and continue later. The game itself needs to recognize that it's saving something on its "battery backup" in order to allow you to continue where you left off.
This works fine with my PC emulator for the Genesis and it's the exact same rom file I'm using on the TX. So, is there any reason why the ROM on the TX fails to perform that "saving" function? It also won't allow me to keep user records on the rom.
Any help on this one, guys?

Hmm, weird because SRAM is supposed to work. For example, Sonic 3 works.
Try the game in Genesis Plus, on your PC.

Also, to _Em, when you got NHL 93 and 94 to work, were they really slow or am I doing something wrong? THanks To free the cache without DBCache Tool, you need to perform a soft reset (using a program like Resco Explorer or LJP that gives you a reset option, or with the stylus button on the back of the TX). '93 and '94 weren't really slow for me, although they weren't speed demons either. You'll probably want to adjust your settings to get as much of a speed increase as you can; you also might want to use PXA Clocker (I found that for me, changing bus speed or checking the mem box caused a whitescreen (have to wait for the battery to drain and then charge/boot). Setting Turbo to Sys x2.0, and Sys to 260 was stable for me (gives you 520MHz instead of the default 312MHz). I found that with screen at regular size with smoothing at 2 and frameskip 0, I got around 33fps; at 1.5x, this dropped to 10fps. With smoothing off, it was 28-33fps at 1.5x as well.

Not that smoothing at 1x makes much sense

Anyone have an answer on the battery backup thing?
The rom I'm using won't let me create a user profile within the game or save my progress within a playoff tournament.
The same rom on my PC let's me do both of these things. Does LJP have a problem recognizing roms from cartridges that had battery backup?
I guess you have to have had some experience back in the day with NHL94, but if you wanna try it... The first thing you'll notice in the main menu is that you can't change the User Profile option from OFF to ON. Load up NHL 94 and start a playoff. After the first game in your playoff, you'll notice that the CONTINUE PLAYOFF option in the main menu is not the playoff you were playing. Therefore, the game doesn't continue your playoff or keep track of your user record.
Thanks to anyone who wants to try and help me out with this.
