Sadly, that won't work for arbitrary points, otherwise I would already be filing the patent Anyway, I've done a quick test by simply drawing in CliƩPaint and it looks good: This is a cleaned up version: The small squares are the areas where the button presses ended up, the large square on the left is the controller and the circles on the right are the buttons. The lines are what I got when I pushed a button in addition to a direction. As you can see, they are not 100% precise, sometimes a line is a little shorter, sometimes a little longer, but with a combination of direction and length we get pretty good results

If you can map this to a DIA-sized frame, that would be excellent! For that matter, in landscape mode, if such a bar could be put on the opposite side of the screen from the hard buttons, you could have two-handed control

I don't think that would be a problem (You've got to ask Henk about it, but I don't see any). But, back to the multibutton emulation... I've tried again... these are the results for left and down, combined with every button. You see how small the area is where the points group? All we've got to do is wait 1/10th of a second and it's almost definately at a point that's definately telling us which other button was pressed.

what about where the lines intercept/cross? How do you get it to tell you're pressing Down (left side) and up (right side) instead of Left (left side) and Down (right side) if it lands in those intersections?

Probably by looking at what you had before. Unless you can manage to press the same points at the exact same time Anyway, I see the logic behind this... but it's probably easier said than done in programming. Especially fast. It would be cool to have a prototype though...

I'll try to do a prototype this sunday.

Postponed because of another deadline on monday. Anyway, the Ux has arrived and since it's in much better condition than mine (which has a few problems: whining screen and two screws missing at the bottom) you'll get my old one, I hope you can live with that

Hans,
the UX50 arrived. Thank you very much. Now I need some time to play with it and the XBox-BT-Gamepad.

Great I noticed that I forgot to include MemoryStick and Hotsync cable, but I can send you those in a letter if you need them. (However it should be noted that I don't use the HS cable, because Wifi sync works absolutely perfect). As for the MS, you can use the internal flashcard as storage as well, but I can send you the MS too, if you want.

The unit I sent him is a bit battered, so I don't think we can convince him to actually use it. There's a loud screen whining, really loud and two of the screws are replaced with glue because I scraped the heads when I opened it to add the new battery.
As for the UX... the problem I have with the UX is that it's such a brilliant working machine, an average media player and a really lousy gaming machine. If we could combine it with the Zodiac and the Treo, then we would have a nearly perfect machine... (we'd also need a better keyboard layout, but at least that can be done with KeyQuick).
Imagine, a Zodiac style system architecture, but with keyboard and protected screen, a more compact design and cell-phone capabilites. Now, that would be a killer device (And if somebody starts talking about the iPhone now, I'm gonna freak out, because this thing is a $600 cellphone with a decent browser and nothing more)

the screen is a bit small, but I can't hear a noise (must be my age :-) I miss badly a HW home key, but found ctrl+H or such works. WiFi is only WEP, it's a pity. I really could need the memory stick to put the files on it.

I really could need the memory stick to put the files on it. I hate that. I'm always going back and forth between WEP (at home) and WPA (at my parent's house). When a device lacks one it's really noticeable. Don't worry Hans, you couldn't pay me to use an iPhone. I've found myself trolling a few iPhone boards (I really should stop that) just because I'm so sick of them talking about how revolutionary it is and how much everything else sucks. But if I mention all the things it can't do that a Treo can they either either say something about system stability or just start calling me names. Umm...sorry didn't mean to get this off topic. Metaview, good luck doing wonderful things with your new device. It's really cool to see everyone working together here to create some great software.

I'll send you the MS tomorrow... do you need the hotsync cable or do you have one yourself (to all those who wonder why he would have an UX50 cable: The UX has a standard micro usb plug)?

I have a mini USB. But I don't think I will hotsync. The TX is the only device which has the honor to be hotsynced every there and then :-)

Well, my TX no longer hotsyncs its calendar since Apple upgraded to 10.4.10. Very annoying. I think we're getting off topic though
