I'm using a Zire 72 and when I play SNES games, I cannot save. I click on the save option but the save states are not selectable (grayed out)
what am I doing wrong?

They should be selectable. Gray only means they're empty  |

Unless you have a problem like i had where if i would save it a few times the save slots became gray and unselectable. The way i got around it was to save it once or twice, exit the emulator, then re-enter it and then repeat everytime you have to save it multiple times.
