or will the shareware ones do? Can I use extra free wads without the commercila or shareware wads?

Yeah, you can use the shareware WADs and most 3rd party WADs work too. Just google for "doom wads" and you'll get TONS of options.

It depneds on the WAD. Some require the original WADs to be present, I think those are called PWADs. I'm no Doom expert so I can't help you much here.
