I am happy to say that PalmNet's first Quake server is set up it'll be running for as long as possible during the christmas holidays... might be 24/7, if not it'll be running for about 14 hours per day. Server's been running completely lag-free during testing, and it has 16 slots. If it's popular i'll run another one on my comp simultaneously, and persuade my friend to put his 2.2ghz server tower to good use
It's a normal Quake server, so anyone with the original Quake can join, but it's devoted to ZQuake. Why? Because no-one runs dedicated Quake servers anymore... and I reckon it'll be great to have some proper deathmatching on Palms thus PalmNet's slogan "Pwning noobs...on the go!"
Server address: 82.69.42.192
Port: 26000
Tickrate: 100 ticks per second (100fps?)
Max. Players: 16
Mods?: Nah...not yet; since not everyone has the mods like Hipnotic, Rally, Rogue etc...
Coop/Deathmatch?: Deathmatch. If I setup a second server, the second server will be on Co-Op mode.
Step 1: If you're on an internet-enabled Palm and can't work out how to get Multiplayer Quake/can't find the options for it; download Metaview's patch for ZQuake at www.metaviewsoft.de/en/Software/PalmOS/Freeware/ZQuake/zquake.zip
and replace your current zquake.zdk file (the one on your SD card://PALM/Programs/ZQuake/) with the one in the .zip file, and replace your zquake.prc (wherever you've installed it) with the one from the zip file, too.
Step 2: Open ZQuake. Press the Options button... on the screen there should be a drop down box with the words "One Player" on it. Tap it, then select "TCP/IP" from the list. Four small text boxes should appear, with the letters 'IP' next to them. This is where you enter the IP address of the server you're going to connect to to play multiplayer. Example: If you're gonna connect to my one (the PalmNet one), you have to enter 82 in the first box, 69 in the second one, 42 in the third one, and 192 in the last one. Ignore the "ID" box, just leave it as 0...not sure what it does, but leaving it alone works fine for me
Since there's no OK button, click Launcher. Your settings will be saved. Launch ZQuake the normal way.
NOTE: If the server you're going on is using a mod (such as Rally) you'll need to have that mod on your SD card, and you'll need to select it from the PAK list on the main screen, then launch it.
Step 3: When the game starts, you still won't be connected to the server; but the settings for it will have all been entered into the multiplayer settings panel. To connect, bring up the main menu, select multiplayer, then join game, then TCP/IP, and scroll down to where it says "Connect to address:". The server's IP address should automatically appear here. Press fire or something to connect. Voila! You're online
If it just says "No protocol selected" or something when you select Join Game, exit Quake and repeat step 2. If it still doesn't work; have you actually got Metaview's patch? I often mess up installing ZQuake/ZDoomZ etc, and it took me a while to figure out that I was copying the wrong version of the game to the card
If you've got everything working and it still doesn't work then, ummm... go ask Metaview?
People with LifeDrives/TXes/T5s etc should have no troubles playing the game, or connecting to the internet. You can use Bluetooth instead of Wifi... but since I haven't tried using Bluetooth I can't help there. Google is your friend.
Happy DMing
Oh, and one last thing... anyone willing to host some more servers for PalmNet, or do they already have a Quake server people could connect to? If you have, don't hesitate to add them to the PalmNet servers list, located here
