I figured with the newer model it would be more playable, but it's still fairly crummy, especially in battle. Is there a setting combination that ends up with this game being normal-speed?

Hi, do not expect the emu to run everything at full speed with 100% fidelity to the original snes hardware.
In the debug menu you can "activate/desactivate" some graphic feature of the Snes (this will of course change the rendering compare to the original) but may be save you some speed.
Disabling the audio is also a huge cpu power saver, but in some games you may have problems because of this. (Look at other thread or online manual)

just some things i always do to games is turn sound to 44 and cpu clock speed to 333 and all the games so far seem to work alright. one more thing the gfx on it sometimes need to be changed because on my fully translated star ocean needed it even though this emu needs to get the sound and graphic bugs out for star ocean (nothing to making unplayable but some sounds are annoying).

The speed savers I have found are 1) speed off (if you can 2) if you are not worried about screen size set the screen ratio to 1:1 and turn of smoothing. This leaves a decent display while not comprimising speed. 3) CPU at 333. 4) Frameskip at Auto
I have had Mario RPG running full with sound with the smoothing off and it looks decent. Not too noticable at 1:1. If you use any larger screen ratios it is really ugly though.

mario rpg will still be slow, at least for a long time. the problem is the game is using a second cpu (SA1), which is the same as the snes cpu, but faster. so from a snes cpu point of view, emulating mario rpg is like emulating 2/3 games at the same time. huge speed boost could be achieve by rewriting the snes cpu core in MIPS assembly, but it won't be before long...
