problem with snes reset time key combination

I'm trying to access the sound test menu in seiken densetsu 3 and of bahamut lagoon (the version which have it embedded translated to English).
but i can't get it to work. i press the l+r and then go to the menu still getting them pressed but i have to leave them to make the menu appear. t hen i go to reset nes and i press l+r after the confirmation for reset, the same thing i have to leave and repress instantly l+r buttons but then the sound test menu doesn't appear. there is any way to make this work?

The best idea I have is to make a savestate in Zsnes and import it.
