Sega RPG's sucks. SNES has all the best RPG's. Some are called Earthbound, Emerald Dragon, Bahamut Lagoon, Breath of Fire 2&3, Star Ocean(must have), Crono Trigger....etc, the list goes on.

I would reccomend starting the way I did, final Fantasy 2, then Chrono Trigger, then FF3 (FF6Jap), then start to branch out from there. You will find also that some of the import stuff we didn't get is great. RPG's didn't pick up in america until FFVII, so we lost a TON of great games. Companies were afraid to release them. Examples FFV, Dragon Quest I+II reprise, Dragon Qeust III, Dragon Quest 5, Dragon Quest 6, Bahamut Lagoon, Seiken Densetsu 3 (secret of mana2), Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia. Avoid Sega RPG's unless you really want to play phantasy star. If you must, then play shining force. NES has the orignal dragon warrior set 1-4, FF1,2,3, Earthbound 1, Faxanadu, Y's I+ II.

Some people consider it an RPG because it seems to have a level progression, I look at it as an action/adventure. I do this because a similar game I could not put into the RPG catagory was Metroid, which has a very similar construct, and progression. But yes, do play it also. Also there are some KILLER sidescrollers, and shooters for SNES. Metroid, Castlevania 4, Aero Fighters, Gradius 3. Go to gamefaqs and look up the games, and see what readers said about em imo. You will find a treasure trove of good info.

I guess not, and so is Zelda. It's a typical action/adventure game.

mario is a side-scrolling platformer where you dont gain new equipment, venture into dungeons, talk to other npc's etc. zelda is NOT a typical action/adventure at all. it's an RPG game minus the fact that you don't gain levels and perhaps that you fight in realtime.

The standard definition of RPG is such Role Playing-Game where game elements that were originally transfered from PnP games, carry such elements such as damage generated off a scale 2D6 or 2-12 dmg. Defense is based off a saving throw which is = armor class + roll. Traditional computer RPG's followed this formula very strictly. This in console RPG's has become a combination of effecting attributes plus weapon damage. Yet it still transfer. The biggest difference between electronic RPG's and PnP RPG's is that the electronic ones deal with limitations based on computer physics. PnP's only limitation is the imagination of the user and how much an ass the GM/DM is.
So when I look at this Zelda is not really an RPG. It works more like a side scroller than an RPG. Hell, from development perspectives Zelda 1-3 are all side scrollers. (zelda 2 the most) .
But this is just my opinion. I think it is a good one. Follow the history of gaming and the history of RPG's. Watch what joins them. Examine the elements that define them, compare them to Zelda and make your won choice imo. Or just be lazy and play the game and have fun.
Kyros, you tried anything new yet?

Yes I have Prettzv, I took all of the suggestions you guys made on this thread and I'm starting with SNES (which is my favorite retro console) games such as Bahamut Lagoon then (in alphabetical order) Breath of Fire II, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest VI, Final Fantasy III, Seiken Densetsu 3, Star Ocean (for which I still can't find an English translation for) and Tales of Phantasia...then onto Sega Genesis, but so far I only like Shining Force 2...then last but not least Gameboy/Gameboy Color, which would be Dragon Warrior III, The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons (which is the only Zelda I haven't beaten besides The Legend of Zelda II which was a disgrace to the Zelda saga and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker which I wasn't excited for, but anyway I'd rather try Wind Waker then Zelda II anyday...if only there were a Gamecube emulator for the PSP...I can dream) and last but also not least Lufia The Legend Returns. So if you guys think I might be missing out on a great RPG that I haven't listed lemme know and I'll try it out and add it to my collection, because these games aren't gonna be around forever so might as well collect them now. Thanx for you time

www.dejap.com/files/dejap-so-eng-10.zipThis is the link to Star Ocean IPS. Then use Lunar IPS patcher to fix it. Test it on PC first. I enjoyed Zelda 2, but I played it for the first tiem on release day Play Final Fantasy Adventures for GB, then Secret of Mana for SNES IMO. Then play Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2). That is the whole official series. Part 4 is being released for PS2 soon.

prettzv, im pretty sure seiken densetu is considdered secret of mana 2, not 3, as seiken densetu 2 is secret of mana. both however are really good games, which ive been playing a fair bit rercently (on my psp thatnks toi yoyofr) most fo the great rpg's have already been mentioned, but one i feel must be played is rudora no hiou (SP?) roughly translated to treasures of the rudra, or, rudras treasures. there is a full translation on the net, and is one of squaresofts better games, might be worth checking out treasure hunter G (not sure if there is a translation or not)

prettzv, im pretty sure seiken densetu is considdered secret of mana 2, not 3, as seiken densetu 2 is secret of mana. Seiken densetsu: final fantasy gaiden was released as a prequel to the mana series on the Gameboy. It was titled Final Fantasy Adventrue. Then Seiken densetsu 2 was released state side as Secret of Mana. Seiken Densetsu 3 never achieved US release, but has gone as Secret of Mana 2 to the emulation community since I started back in 1996 or so. (This was when the only translation I could find were from one guy and his team which I fail to remember now. They were mediocre at best though. I remeber they got linked from Zophars though.)

I am about to start treasures of rudra. This is one that has missed my keen eye Thnx Goodall. And yes secret of evermore is a good game, but generally doesn't make my list of top 10's. I also loved the Lufia Series, despite bad visuals. Update: Rudra no hihou is freaking AWSOME!!!!

Wow, I just got a lot of things to try out from this thread.
The only one I couldn't find a translation for was Bahumat Lagoon.
EDIT: Spoke too soon.
EDIT2: One really fun suggestion that wasn't included is the Super Mario RPG. A little hard to find and not as feature rich as some RPGs, but it's quite fun.

Yes Mario RPG is good. It;s actually the first RPG that I have ever actually gotten into. The only bad thing is that it is not running at full speed with sound on snes9xtyl.

i like earthbound but the battles are kinda lame. the battle starts and its almost like ur blindfolded when they are fighting since it tells u in text what happens for example"SMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH Ness hit 285 damage" at least pokemon showed ur character somewhat fighting. Also Chrono trigger is still an amazing game but the start of the game is slow but the slow start is worth the wait

Earthbound was way before pokemon. Plus it followed a very simple formula, and it almost mimicked Mother 1. (Earthbound NES). Looking at it as if I just played it without knowledge of the series, then yes it is bad battles, but I have a different perspective on it. CHRONO TRIGGER is IMHO exactly what an RPG is supposed to be. It took what all teh others had built and perfected it. There are a ton of great RPG's though. Only a handful have perfected the formula. The best part of the beginning of chrono trigger is that it starts on a light hearted and happy note. You are blissfully unaware of how crazy your life is about to become. Opposed the the FFVII series, it uses the atomosphere to give you a feeling of comfort and security. FF series starts often with mystery.
