I've been keeping an eye on that since yesterday too - unfortunately at this point it looks like it's gonna have the same problem as Android - no developer support for native apps. All apps have to be programmed through an abstraction layer using HTML, Javascript, and AJAX web protocols, and there's talk of requiring only signed (certified) applications to be able to run on it.
I still think it's gonna be an awesome device, especially if I'm proven wrong and we're able to run native code on it.

Well, eventually someone's going to unlock them, and then homebrew apps will be usable (like with the iPhone). What I'd REALLY like is for them to follow Nokia and allow you to run PalmOS 5 inside -- then many of the old apps will work too.

It looks amazing, I've been waiting for this news for a while so I can replace my zire 72, iPod and java based phone combo with this! countbuggula, I really hope they don't end up doing what you said and have the same problem as the Android and iPhone I don't want a phone that requires jail breaking, it's always a battle with the manufacturer to receive updates and re-jailbreak them. We should petition to Palm about this because if they have the only device on the market that doesn't require jail breaking like Palm OS 5, they will have so many sales, or at least to geeks like us! www.petitionspot.com/I also hope they add an SD card slot to it, then it would be the 100% perfect device with the new SDXC cards that have a theoretical limit of 2TB and read/write of 300mb/s! www.sdcard.org/developers/tech/sdxc

Palm Pre uses a TI OMAP 3430 processor. And I doubt Palm do not put a white border on it... If so, they are really refusing their past.

Here's some specs on the processor mobilitytoday.com/news/009209/palm_pre_processor focus.ti.com/general/docs/wtbu/wtbuproductcontent.tsp?templateId=6123&navigationId=12643&contentId=14649 Also does anyone know if they are making the firmware upgradeable like Android or the iPhone because after reading some more news it seems countbuggula was right but they may update it later to add support for Native code. It also appears that they will be using an app market which I like but I still want to be able to just place the .prc files somewhere in the memory and be able to run them. Hopefully this device doesn't require jailbreaking, or if it does Palm won't release any updates to stop us since they only want to make it simpler for people who don't know what they're doing. Maybe if Metaview talks about these issues in his blog, maybe, just maybe, someone important at Palm will notice. I just hope these new Palms don't have any limitations over the older ones because I still prefer my zire 72 to devices such as an itouch.

More than likely the SDK is going to be pretty extensive, since Palm's not exactly a hot name anymore and this is their first entry into the newest generation of PDAs. What I do know is that there's no way to have native support for Palm OS applications, due to a completely different processor and a new kernel. Since there are already so many different applications on Palm OS, I'd bet money an emulator is on it's way. However, that's not going to be nearly enough to run LJP.

Styletap has already voiced their intentions of porting their PalmOS emulator to WebOS, but have voiced concern that they will likely need more direct access to the linux underpinnings of the system than is available through the SDK to make it happen.
We wouldn't want to try and run LJP on this anyway, ideally we'd port LJR to it - but that's likely not going to be possible with the developer support at least initially.
That said, I hope I'm wrong, and that we'll be able to have very robust direct calls to the hardware right out of the gate...I'm just not holding my breath.
