BTW, make sure you're not using SharckCache or anything that locks an application in the cache... Better yet, Dmitry just released UnCache, which is precisely the opposite of SharkCache, it keeps everything from being locked into the cache. After a reset, you will find yourself with a much larger amount of cache, and all of the free cache will be defragmented. It does let you specify programs that can be loaded into cache, since some (like YAHM, DALauncher, MySkin, etc) need to be there to activate. You can get UnCache for $5.95 at PalmPowerupsPS: With UDMH, it works even better!

Is this the team project i was asking about in "Out of Memory" with SNES games? Might be. There is one other project in limbo right now, but this was a TEAM project, and it will help with your cache memory alot.

Well I have tried all of the above to try to get my LD to emulate gen and snes and I got them to emulate but.. it likes to reset allot ... so far what i have found to work best for LD if at all.. was to run DBCache then do a soft reset and then enable Dmitry's UDMH after doing that i get..
Cache(heap) size: 13827824 Free: 10374432 Max alloc: 10371408
launch Ljp. If it resets delete ljp.ini and the .zem files using Resco File Explorer or something similar. Then rerun the Ljp installer and it should work. also to get sound in gen games enable the ZX80 option in the audio tab and in most gen games u will now have sound. ;D

Hey, This is a great emulator. I love it!
Just a quick question, If I use Uncache do I still need DBcache?

They serve two different purposes -- UnCache keeps things from preloading into cache; DBCache Tool cleans what it can out of the cache after it has been filled. You're generally better off to do a soft reset than to clear the cache with DBCache Tool, unless you have a LifeDrive (in which case, a soft reset just takes way too long).

I loaded all of the applications into my Palm TX and now Genesis and SNES roms run just fine. Quite an amazing piece of software, it runs these games very fast.
My concern is this...now that I've loaded all these applications into my Palm, how is it going to effect my Palm for other programs? I'm worried something I've loaded will adversely effect something else I'm running. I really don't have an idea of what these apps do and it makes me a little weary of using them.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks

Safe-boot works for me. But w/o I get 2 megabytes cache. When I first did all of this LD optimization I got 8 MB. This morning after a 3 week hiatus I decide to fire up LJP rc2. I discover that I have 5 MB cache so I say OK, GB/Nes only. Then I decide I want the rest of my cache back. So I Install uncache I didn't know that I didn't have memunfrag. And get ~900KB . Then I throw out uncache 4 memunfrag . Then I delete doc 2 go and versamail. And here I am at 5 MB.Do I have a memory leak? The 3rd party apps I have are TealMaster -The new version is s'possed ta lock hackss in cache(~50k) TealLaunch TealTools Hack UDMH MemUnfrag DbCacheTool FrameTX Brightness

Filling the Palm with lot of background hacks doesn't increase the amount of free DBCache. All you should have is: UDMH and UnCache. Where do you believe does stuff like TealMaster, FrameTX or Brightnessfix stay? In the DBCache...

Filling the Palm with lot of background hacks doesn't increase the amount of free DBCache. All you should have is: UDMH and UnCache. Where do you believe does stuff like TealMaster, FrameTX or Brightnessfix stay? In the DBCache... I never said that they would increase cache size. I said that they are 2k, 10k. So where did the rest of the cache go?... I guess I could go without my hacks but they (Total) ar around 800k. And my cache size (used+free) is fluctuating.(says db cache tool). So I end up with the best of both worlds. I used resco Explorer to do a backup, then hard reset. Now i have 10 MegaBytes maxalloc. I'll just restore later. ;D Edit 30 min later: 100% success The whole procedure minus LJP time took 10 min Thanks for the help, but I can't live without my hacks, now I have found the way for cache hungry apps like docs to go, versamail, etc to coexist in harmony with LJP. In the mean time I am going to read up on this DbCache doo-hickey and NVFS. Does anyone have good references? Could I write an app that: Copies the contents of the cache to the microdrive. Then Forcibly removes locked files in the cache presenting whatever needs the cache (LJP in this case) with much more space. Then launches said app. After user exits it removes that applications entries. Restores the db cache from disk. Launches whatever the user asked for? Or would that just crash?

UnCache in a way, that no app gets a reset notification, then do a softreset: almost all dbcache is free. Switch off UnCache and do the softreset again, everything is as before: all hacks and less dbcache.

oh, and docs2go preloads a bunch of stuff; keep that disabled to free up a chunk of memory.

Dmitry's Uncache is great software but it has one Intrinsic limitation. You have to reset to clear your cache. Now on other palms besides the Life Drive a reset may take the normal 5 seconds that a non nvfs palm does. Because there is a rom chip. But because the Life Drive boots up from the MicroDisk it takes 3 minutes. Not too inconvenient but very annoying. What I'm looking for is the creation of... essentially a page file since you could expect the nvfs drive never to be removed (logically). The Microdrive has a write speed ~900KB/s and a read speed ~2MB/s. So that operation would take a lot less time that a reset! I may not have to go low level. Right now I see 2 approaches to this problem that don't involve an assembly debugger. 1)Scan all of the dynamic heap for a DmOpenRef and then use VFSExportDBToFile() API to copy it to the card use DmCloseDatabase to unlock the DB and any records locked in cache. Cause a system purge of everything not locked in cache by sequentially reading every data base not already open thus filling the cache (which triggers purge). 2) scan dbcache for the db itself and directly modify the info (lock count and open count) then copying and purging.
I would test my setup by measuring the time it takes to open the db after I let the HDisk spin down. I want to be able to run LJP, then savestate and exit. Switch to docs2go to read the next room to go to in zelda (walkthrough/FAQ)and switch back with little to no problems. That is the possibility I am examining! --------------------------------------------------- That brings me to the MicroDrive itself. I HATE how it spins down in about 5 seconds. This causes high horse power apps like Plazmoids to "skip". Ljp doesn't seem to be affected.. But other programs' skipping makes me angry. The microdrive can't make up it's mind whether to move or rest. I think that I could launch a backround thread to use VFSFileRead() (a byte) on volume.nam every few seconds. It's the one file guaranteed to be on a pilot memory stick.
I await your replies, ZakaqerE

Hello, wonderfull work! this is fine with my zire 72 but I got some problems with my new TX before reading this post... not sure I'll sell my Zire now I tested FF IV SNES and it works fine but I got problems with FF V (on TX only) => this message "deinterleaved mode 2" or something like that, it doesn't stay and then strange things (but no crash) Is it a known problem? thank you PS: sorry for my poor english

That means that your ROM was dumped in the wrong mode (deinterleaved mode 2) meaning that it's an NTSC ROM that has had the interleaved field pairs merged. A clean dump of your FF V ROM should fix the issue.

on my t|x: Check udmh is enabled Clear DB cache run ljp.
i dunno what the db cache is but it takes a lot longer to clear w/ udmh enabled than w/o. i have udmh (no adding an ljp profile in it)+ memunfrag, plus a couple of dynamic mem 'hogs' (mcPhling, iSpin,d2g,vm,etc) and it runs non-superFX snes games at near 100% w/ little to no skip! But, 3d games like StuntRaceFX and SM RPG are skipping, but still, no soft reset required here!
How much of what is on this thread is LD only? am i forgetting to mention stuff? seems like u boys are having a heckuva time riggigths up while I fly into the sunset playing Super Mario
The microdrive is what kept me from buying an ld. 'stead i got my beautiful t|x. <kisses screen>
You guys are talking about some bit-banging programming styles. where'd u get the docs to build this s***?

Most of the stuff on this thread is for all NVFS (including T|X) devices. However, you'll need something like WarpSpeed or PXA Clocker to bring the T|X clockspeed up to a point where the more complex games are playable without frameskip. And don't go above 520MHz, unless you're feeling really lucky; that's the top speed for most TX processors.
