www.classicdosgames.com/source.htmlWhile searching the net for the source code or a port of Halloween Harry (Unsuccessful, but there were some rumours that it may be coming to GBA) I found this site, has source code for a handful of old DOS games (Wolf3d, ROTT, and Descent!!!). I can't download anything in the office so maybe someone can check if the links still work? I know your all busy with current projects, but it may be of interest to one of you.

I think someone maybe is trying to port Descent.

I'm the webmaster of Classic DOS Games. I host all files locally to make sure that I never have any dead links. I've been working on getting Halloween Harry/Alien Carnage freeware for a while now. I created an online petition and contacted the copyright holder, John Passfield, about making the game free and/or releasing the source code so that it could be ported. He was very receptive to the idea, but he told me that he's working on getting the game ported to handheld computers first. I'm sure he'll release the game, and possibly even the source code, as soon as it won't hurt sales of the game for some other platform. He explained his plans in an interview he did for the site at www.classicdosgames.com/interviews.html. As for Descent, there is a port for Windows at d1x.warpcore.org/ and a multi-platform port of Descent II at www.icculus.org/d2x/.

Descent is a huge amount of single c-files. I had a short look on it, and dropped it, as it will take quite an amount of time to do the PalmOS port. But maybe someone else pick it up.

Hey DOSguy, very cool site, has made me spend the weekend digging around in boxes to find all my old cds! Also got me dreaming of the day I can play Hal Harry on my GBA!
I think Descent may be too complicated for palm, I rember needing a dozen buttons just to control movement!
Rise of the Triad would be really nice though, its a shame it got overshadowed by Doom and Duke3d back in the day, lots of people missed out.

I would sell my soul for Elder Scrolls: Arena (yes the original)On my Palm. that would be awesome. it was only 13 floppies so it's not big by any means. it ran on a 486 33 MHZ so it's not bad on resources. If anyone has any leads on this i'll do whatever it takes to get my hands on it.

ES: Arena is available as a free download from Bethesda Softworks, but getting ahold of the souce would be the key to actually porting it. Good luck with that.
On another note, they've made mobile "oblivion" games for smartphones, but for some reason decided to ignore Palm and PocketPC platforms, which is odd because from what I can tell they're java-based, which would make them rediculously easy to port. Perhaps we need to send them a few kind emails reminding them of the customer base they're ignoring in the treo smartphone market.

Palm's Java VM, for the ones that have it, is too crappy to be worth it...

Palm's Java VM, for the ones that have it, is too crappy to be worth it... Now that I think about it...yeah, you're right. That could explain their hesitation. I'd still love to see some form of Elder Scrolls game on the Palm but it's very unlikely.

Has anyone looked at the possibility of porting DOSBox? The source is available...and I know there wouldn't be great performance by any means but the idea of having a c:\ prompt on my palm kind of tickles me...

yeah... it would be very nice to have a "c:\" prompt in your palm... but thinking about DOSBox? I've tested it in my PC (P4 3.0ghz 2Gb Ram) and try some of my old games... one of them runs very slowly: Crusader No Remorse. So if you're planning to run old DOS games, maybe you'll be out of luck... BTW maybe Tinnus, metaview, laxer, yoyo... or even me if I have time, could code a nice palm app that shows you your lovely "c:\" prompt...

Yeah...unfortunatly DOSBox is very slow. I actually use VDMSound more often to play old DOS games because it's not actually an emulator, just a sound-wrapper (allows you to play DOS games with sound on modern OS) and doesn't suffer from the speed hit. DOSBox just has more compatibility...there's some things that simply won't run in WinXP anymore . So...instead of porting DOSBox, a Palm App that uses DOS commands just for file management? I like it! Even if it just allows browsing and copy, etc I'd use it!

a shell on a pen-device? weird indeed... But DOSBox will come. At least I have reports for usable speeds in the Pocket PC port.

Good enough for me. Does that mean that you are or will be working on it? Or do you know of someone else who is? Either way that's great news.

Porting DOSBox is not an option (it's possible to borrow some code like FM or MT32 emulator but CPU core is [ censored] slooooow) DOSBox is ok for running old 16bit games like Duke Nukem 1-3, Commander Keen or Dune II but if game requires 386 and DOS extender you'll need something like A64 X2 to run it at full speed (Warcraft is nothing but a slide show on AthlonXP 3200+. weeeird...) DOSEmu is vaaay faster (at least it runs Chasm or any other 486+ game faster than real P120) It's really good to have real sound card (Vortex 2) with DOS drivers and use real DOS, and even better - to get 120-300Mhz laptop w/ hardware DOS-compatible sound card and VESA 2.0 video, don't drink five or ten bottles of beer and it's yours ) Palm has 200-400+ CPU but it's nothing like 200 MHz Pentium, PPC or SH4, it's waaaay slower. To run something like Warcraft you'll need supahypamegaultra-optimized dynarec core, it's not that easy to write one and still it will be slow like hell.

Actually my whole reason for wanting DOSBox on the Palm would be for the super-duper old-school games. Give me Alleycat and Commander Keen on my Palm and I'll be sittin' happy. I wouldn't dream of trying to run something like Warcraft on a palm anyways. There's always Warefare Inc. if I need my RTS fix on the go.

I hope you already noticed, EyWitness, but Halloween Harry/Alien Carnage was released as freeware on May 24. A handheld version is still possible, but now you can enjoy the original for free! If you haven't already.

Sweet! Preliminary testing shows that it does, indeed work on my device. I plan to really give it a thorough run-down and give some good feedback. Oh, you just made my day. Thank you Henk!!!

Ok, first round of feedback:
I'm testing this on my 755 with UDMH and Lightspeed set to 234 - 585
It took a few tries before I finally figured out they way you had the keyboard set up. The whole hold down shift AND alt at the same time, plus k = :
Because, I'll be honest, there's not so much you can do in DOS until you can get yourself to the C:\ prompt.
With that out of the way, I launched a few games. Alleycat seems to run fine (although very slowly still) but the whole bottom part of the screen shows garbage. A stretched mode would be nice here (to fill it out vertically).
Commander Keen 4 shows the loading screen but crashes (reboot) immediately afterward.
Commander Keen 1 loads into the game itself, and upon entering the first level crashes (reboot).
That's all I was able to put on my card during lunch, but I'll try to test more in the next few days. This is exciting! I look forward to this having more features. You obviously have more in mind as there are many menu items in the launcher that currently do nothing - I assume that's simply because this is an early alpha build and you haven't implemented them yet.
Is there any way we can work screen scaling into the mix soon so we can down-scale to the Palm resolution instead of scrolling around the screen? That's high on my wish list. The keyboard support is a great step in the right direction and the ability to use the 5-way for joystick, arrow keys, or scrolling is great. Will we be able to map the button that switches that instead of using the center button? I could see myself accidentally pushing that while trying to play something.
Thanks so much for working on this! What a treat!

The menu is still from voda. down-scaling would be cool, right, but I need to rewrite the whole screen update stuff. Also one could imagine to have the Dos-Exe selected in the Launcher and DosBox then automatically runs it. Would prevent one from entering the stupid dos commands...

Ah, ok sounds good. I can wait if you're planning on making more changes to the screen update, especially if that means it'll all work together better in the end. I like the idea of picking your executable from the launcher, but part of the fun of having DosBox is being able to play with the dos commands, so I hope you leave the option to run without an exe.
Am I the only one who remaps linux commands to the old familiar DOS commands? I just used it so long that it became second nature to me...

NOOO! I sold my Treo 650 to buy a Moto Q9h so I could use Pocket DOS. I figured that DOS was never going to happen on the Palm.
